Due to inclement weather, Bowie State University will be closed January 26-27, 2026. All classes, office operations and on-campus activities are canceled. Residence halls will remain open. Richard W. Collins III Leadership with Honor Scholarship

In an effort to preserve the legacy of slain Bowie State alumnus Lt. Richard Collins III, the State of Maryland has launched a $1M annual scholarship fund to help students gain a quality education and excellent leadership skills to meet their professional goals.

Funds are available to students enrolled full-time at one of Maryland’s three historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) – Bowie State University, Morgan State University and Coppin State University. Applicants must also be a:

  • Maryland resident
  • U.S. citizen
  • Minority student

Award Amount

Scholarship amounts vary based on the applicant’s financial need, which is determined by the FAFSA. Recipients will receive a minimum award of $500 per semester.

Why ROTC?

Through a combination of rigorous academics, hands-on field experience and physical training, the ROTC prepares students to become well-rounded leaders ready to take on any challenge. Upon completion of the program, not only will cadets earn a degree but also a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army.
