To support the Hip-Hop Studies and Visual Culture Minor, students, faculty, and research within Bowie State University’s VCDMA program, in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts (DFPA), Bowie State University is home to a special Hip-Hop collection donated by Brian E. Lassiter, a cultural historian, collector, music promoter, and writer.

The Brian E. Lassiter Hip-Hop Collection documents Hip-Hop, Black music, culture, history, and visual culture, with materials spanning primarily 1980–1993. The collection includes books on Black history and culture, memorabilia, vinyl records and LPs, CDs, magazines, artwork, photography materials, business correspondence, and other cultural and music-related materials.

The collection serves as a resource for teaching, student projects, creative research, and scholarship related to Hip-Hop Studies, visual culture, music, art, media, and African American cultural history.

The collection is housed in the Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC), Art Resource Room, FPAC 2102.
