About the Program
Bowie State University received funding through the National Science Foundation's Experiential Learning in Emerging and Novel Technologies (NSF ExLENT) initiative to launch its AI Internship Program. Operating on a yearly cohort model, the program bridges classroom learning with professional practice, giving Computer Science students the tools and experience needed to succeed in emerging technology fields. Participants progress through a carefully designed sequence that builds both technical capability and workplace readiness, culminating in a fully compensated summer internship.
Program Structure
Three-Phase Approach:
- Winter: Focused technical training in machine learning fundamentals, algorithm design, and AI methodologies
- Spring: Collaborative sessions with industry stakeholders emphasizing communication, teamwork, and professional workplace skills
- Summer: Full-time application of acquired skills through project-based work solving authentic AI challenges
Internship Details:
- Duration: 10 weeks
- Hours: 30 hours per week
- Compensation: $22 per hour
- Total Earnings: $6,600
- Work Model: Hybrid (1-2 days on-site, remaining hours remote)
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Undergraduate student at Bowie State University (sophomore standing or higher preferred)
- Major in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or Cyber Operations Engineering
- Completion of Computer Science I and Computer Science II
- Completion of Calculus I with a grade of B or higher
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
- Availability for all three program components: Winter training, Spring professional development, and Summer internship
