Jan. 28 Transition to Virtual Operations, Campus Closed

Bowie State University will be transitioning to virtual operations for all classes and office operations on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The campus will be closed to all non-essential personnel, and all campus activities are canceled. All buildings except residence halls will be closed. Essential personnel should report on time. This is due to the extended time required to clear the extensive snow and ice accumulation on campus. University crews are making every effort to resume campus operations, as a safe return to in-person learning and work remains our top priority. BSU Celebrates Earth Week 2019

This year, Earth Day (April 22) came on a Monday. BSU kicked off the Earth Days celebration on that Monday with a C4 Electronic pledge table in the Student Center where students and other community members pledged their commitment to environmentally responsible acts such as encouraging carpooling, printing double-sided documents and recycling items. There were also games and a chance for students to win gift cards for Netflix, Chick-fil-A, and Subway.

On Tuesday, April 23, BSU hosted the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Prince George’s County Department of the Environment (PGDOE) as they presented on ‘Changing How We think about our resources for a better tomorrow’. The EPA presentation focused on national level crisis issues such as waste management, food waste- how it effects our environment and ways to prevent it, food recovery, and preventing plastic waste. The PGDOE portion focused on local county-wide initiatives such as food composting and yard waste composting. Both agencies recommended ways we can do our part as individuals and as an institution.

Wednesday was our famous 5^th annual Earth Day Poetry Slam where students used spoken word to raise awareness of environmental concerns and injustices. This was a judged competition, led by two student hosts, where staff & faculty rated each performer on delivery and creative content. The top 3 winners won monetary prizes of $175, $100, and $50, respectively. The winning amounts were sponsored by the Bowie State University Student Center.

Lastly, on Sunday, April 28 after week long Torchfest activities, the campus group- Keeping Bowie Clean- along with other organizations teamed up for a campus wide clean up. The clean up effort collected roughly 60 pounds of additional trash after Groundskeeping staff’s efforts.
